We are currently seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide proactive, in–depth analysis and direction of financial operations, including short and long term financial planning, and other finance matters that impact Freelancers Union and its subsidiary entities. The CFO will report to the Executive Director, and as a member of the Executive team will develop and drive organization strategy.
Specific reponsibilities include:
- Define and manage the financial "big picture" for Freelancers Union and its subsidiary entities, using the organizational mission as a framework
- Develop and employ forward–looking, predictive models and activity–based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization's operations and business plans.
- Provide analysis of complex finance–related concepts and situations impacting the financial state of Freelancers Union and present to key stakeholders, including senior management, executive team and Board of Directors.
- Work closely with the Executive team to manage budget processes and link them to Freelancers Union's mission and organiztional goals.
- Hire, develop and manage a business strategy team and work closely with the Chief Accounting Officer and team to align accounting and administrative functions with business strategy.
The CFO will be a seasoned leader with at least 15 years of broad finance experience that ideally includes experience in a multi–entry non–profit with multiple funding sources. Aditional qualifications include:
- Proven ability to perform complex analysis of financial data, including assessment of financially related business capabilities, identification of gaps and development of solutions
- Strong understanding of strategy and organizational dynamics with the innate ability to adopt and communicate a broad strategic (big picture) view
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to communicate financial concepts and data effectively and concisely
- Results–oriented, proactive leadership skills, particularly the ability to lead and motivate others by example
- A high level of self–confidence with a direct, professional, interactive style, that includes offering honest, constructive feedback as needed
- A friendly, collegial personality with compulsive integrity, and a well conditioned sense of humor
- Flexibility to work in a rapidly–changing environment, with an appetite for and sensitivity to organizational culture
- Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of mission–related causes, particularly those of Freelancers Union

We are seeking a talented web designer with five to eight years of diverse experience in dynamic, entreprenurial environments. A knockout personality and portfolio are essential. The web designer will hold significant reponsibility for the design and aesthetic of the Freelancers Union website as well as those of its affiliated entities. This position requires creative leadership and a dedicated, hands-on, hands-dirty approach.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated:
- Strong user interface design skills, including typography, layout, color, illustration skills are a big plus!
- Solid understanding of Web best practices, user-centered design and usability testing
- Exceptional Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign skills with a working knowledge of CSS, HTML and wireframing
- Exposure to and/or experience with diverse design environments i.e. print, illustration, advertising, etc
- A friendly, collegial personality with compulsive integrity, and a well-conditioned sense of humor
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

We are seeking well-rounded and experienced web developers to create and maintain various online products and services. We work with a diverse set of technologies and our projects span multiple domains - from health insurance to political action.
You should have experience with:
- Python, Java or PHP5
- Javascript, HTML, and CSS
- Database design and SQL
- (Obviously!) Developing for the web (working knowledge of HTTP, caching, sessions, etc.)
- Developing in a Linux environment
- Administering web servers (specifically Apache or Lighttpd)
It would be great if you also knew about:
- Application deployment and maintenance with Make, Maven, setuptools, and simple shell scripts
- Frameworks like web.py, Django, Restlet, and Spring
- Back-end queuing/messaging - ActiveMQ
- Progressive enhancement techniques / graceful degradation
Lastly, you'll get special consideration if:
- You are an electronic toy instrument virtuoso
- You can make a delicious grilled cheese

We are seeking a dynamic Development Manager who will work closely with and report to the Executive Director. The Development Manager will supervise all fundraising activities, including philanthropic, social enterprise and individual giving, that contribute to Freelancers Union’s ambitious development goals. The Development Manager will improve internal fundraising systems, manage all development-related reporting requirements, and lead the development team in both strengthening current and creating new relationships through rigorous prospecting, cultivation and stewardship activities.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop and implement strategies focused on fostering fundraising partnerships (foundation, government, corporate and individual) and coordinate the involvement of senior leadership in relationship-building activities
- Work closely with the Event Planning team to ensure the success of new and existing donor-focused events by leveraging local and national networks, and recruiting, coordinating and motivating volunteers and supporters
- Manage, support and coordinate development team and external consultants as appropriate to maximize involvement and impact
- Manage all functions of the development department. This includes: designing and driving action plans to achieve annual fundraising goals; developing and fortifying fundraising systems and processes; and preparing budgets and forecasts and setting and tracking goals related to all fundraising activities
- Support the organization’s senior leadership, and align fundraising efforts with Freelancers Union’s overall strategic plan and organizational goals
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of experience managing development functions in an entrepreneurial nonprofit environment
- Demonstrated success developing and fostering fundraising relationships as well as experience with and/or knowledge of government fund sources. Knowledge of the New York philanthropic community preferred.
- Exceptional understanding of Development networks, practices and strategies across various sectors and industries, as well as the acumen and agility to implement and re-engineer them as needed.
- Strong management skills, with the ability to mentor, coach, and supervise development professionals in early stages of their careers
- A professional, resourceful style with the ability to work as a team member or independently
- Relentless energy and drive toward achieving goals, with an entrepreneurial approach to fund raising and problem-solving
- A friendly, collegial personality with compulsive integrity, and a well conditioned sense of humor
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, development databases and social networking technologies
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred

We are seeking an organized, patient, detail-oriented individual who enjoys helping others to join our member services team as a Member Services Associate. This entry-level position involves extensive phone and email contact with potential and current members of Freelancers Union, and requires development of expertise in our systems (especially databases) and processes for membership and insurance enrollment.
Responsibilities include:
- Handle incoming and outgoing phone calls and emails regarding membership, insurance eligibility, and other member benefits
- Develop and maintain expert understanding of eligibility rules, application processes, enrollment procedures, and details of all member benefits (including insurance products, discount offerings, and more)
- Review and process applications to determine insurance eligibility
- Track all communications and interaction with members in the memberhip database
- Troubleshoot and resolve member issues
Successful candidates will have completed a Bachelors degree and will demonstrate:
- Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and a creative approach to problem solving
- High level of comfort, patience and sensitivity during interactions with people
- Proficiency in the use of MS Office suite with some knowledge of databases
