Insurance

Affordable peace of mind.

Our dental, life, and disability insurance, and our health insurance in New York State, are administered as “group plans.”  That means that we can negotiate for all our members as a group and get a better rate—but it also means that you have to meet certain qualifications in order to join the group.  Here’s what it takes:

1.

Be an independent worker.

Independent Workers are defined as individuals who work as freelancers, independent contractors or consultants, or who are self-employed, employed part-time, temporary workers, or work for multiple companies at the same time.

You will not be considered an independent worker if, at the time of application, you are working full-time as a W-2 employee and have been for the last 18 months for the same employer. The only exception to this is if you work for a temporary or placement agency.

2.

Be a U.S. resident.

If you want health insurance in New York State (FIC, Empire, or PerfectHealth plans), you have to live in New York State or live in Connecticut and work in New York State.

3.

Work in an eligible industry or occupation. These are:

Eligible Industries
Arts, Design & Entertainment
Domestic Child Care Giver
Financial Services
Media & Advertising
Nonprofit
Skilled Computer User
Technology
Traditional or Alternative Health Care Provider

4.

Show hours or earnings in one or more eligible industries or occupations.

We’ll have you submit paperwork to show that:

You’ve worked at least 20 paid hours in each of the last 8 weeks, or you've earned at least $10,000 for work done within the last 6 months.

If you want a Golden Rule health insurance plan, you can ignore Freelancers Union’s eligibility process, but depending on the rules in your state, rates and coverage might vary based on your medical history.

If you’re applying for a Golden Rule health insurance plan and one of our group insurance plans (dental, life, or disability), you’ll still need to complete a Freelancers Union eligibility application for the group insurance plan.
