Sole-Proprietor and Independent Contractor Professionalizing Start-Up Business

Salutations, fellow freelancers of Brooklyn!

Being rather new to the Freelancers Union, I wanted to introduce myself.

My name is Christa, and I work as an independent contractor and sole-proprietor of an editorial and educational business. I moved here from Iowa, where I earned a B.A. in Creative Writing and Business Administration from Coe College, almost two years ago. I've done administrative and educational work outside of my independently contracted work, and have a background in retail, as well.

It's only recently that I've begun really professionalizing my business, as I ran it mostly informally for a while, as side work to get me through school. That being the case, I feel I have much to learn from the local freelance community. My most recent endeavors include branding, designing my logo, setting up a home office, writing a detailed and customizable estimating system and contract, and building a website. I'd also love to learn more about QuickBooks and other financial and record-keeping software. Given the expenses involved with such endeavors, I've also been looking for grants or funding that might function similarly to sponsorships or residencies (although I don't need the physical space) rather than as loans or investments.

As you can see, there are lots of reasons I've joined the community, and any tips or references you might be able to direct me toward would be extremely useful. I'm always happy to connect!

  • Hi Christa,

Welcome to the world of small business! I'd be happy to tell you more about Quickbooks but it's not an intuitive tool for freelancers and it would only make sense to learn it if you're trying to get a career in bookkeeping and accounting.

What you need to efficiently manage the financial operations of your business is to automate and use an all-in-one platform for your money and taxes. If you're looking for a user-friendly software where you can sync your bank account, categorize your income and expenses, monitor how your business is doing, pay your quarterly and annual taxes, and generate a report for tax filing, then I have just the software for you.

*drum roll* Introducing the Levee app (www.getlevee.com). It's a money tracker mobile app that completes your taxes in the background. Let me know if you'd like an exclusive access. Always like to help those just starting out.
