What is Disability Insurance?

Long-term disability insurance (LTD) is an insurance policy that protects you from loss of income in the event that you can’t work due to illness, injury, or accident for a long period of time.

Disability insurance is especially important for freelancers, who don’t have the luxury of vacation days or sick leave in the case of a life-altering event.

Your disability insurance means you’ll get income replacement checks (like a paycheck) while you can’t work.

What are my options?

We offer two types of disability insurance: one begins 30 days after you become disabled and the other begins 90 days after you become disabled. In other words, in the case of an injury or illness, you would have to wait either 30 or 90 days until you receive income replacement checks.

Here's a good rule of thumb: look for a policy that's about 50% of your monthly income. For instance, if you earn $60K per year after all of your business deductions, $2,500 per month of coverage may be a good fit.

How are benefits calculated?

Benefits are based on your taxable earned income, which is your income after taking any business deductions (rent, equipment, etc.). Guardian will request and review your historical tax returns in order to determine the benefit payout.

This all sounds great, but what does it cost?

Check out the table below. Rates are organized by age and the waiting period before you receive benefits, either 30 days or 90 days. 90-day waiting period policies cost less than the same coverage level with a 30-day waiting period.
